Situation Report # 11

The Pohnpei State Department of Health and Social Services and Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force are closely
monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak that was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of the
People's Republic of China (PRC). Since its detection in PRC, COVID-19 cases have spread globally and on March
11, 2020 WHO characterized the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. Globally, as of May 18, 2020, there have been
4,710,614 confirmed cases of COVID-19 [1,870,545 in Europe; 1,966,932 in Regions of the Americas; 167,755 in
Western Pacific; 335,088 in Eastern Mediterranean; 135,036 in South East Asia; and 58,663 in Africa], including
307,537 deaths reported to WHO. 
In the Pacific Islands Region, as of May 15, 2020, there have been 621 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported [638
in Hawaii; 154 on Guam; 60 in French Polynesia; 18 in New Caledonia; 18 in Fiji; 21 in the Northern Marianas Islands
(CNMI); and 8 in Papua New Guinea. A total of 24 deaths have been reported [17 in Hawaii; 5 on Guam and 2 in
