GLOBAL SITUATION OVERVIEW
The Pohnpei State Department of Health and Social Services and Governor’s COVID-19 Task Force are closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak that was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Since its detection in PRC, COVID-19 cases have spread globally and on March 11, 2020 WHO characterized the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic. Globally, as of May 08, 2020, there have been 3,784,085 confirmed cases of COVID-19 [1,626,037 in Europe; 1,542,829 in Regions of the Americas; 156,201 in Western Pacific; 235,398 in Eastern Mediterranean; 82,852 in South East Asia; and 35,470 in Africa], including 254,199 deaths reported to WHO.
In the Pacific Islands Region, as of May 08, 2020, there have been 621 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported [530 in Hawaii; 142 on Guam; 58 in French Polynesia; 18 in New Caledonia; 18 in Fiji; 14 in the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI); and 8 in Papua New Guinea. A total of 24 deaths have been reported so far [17 in Hawaii; 5 on Guam and 2 in CNMI].
